Salvation is the word used to describe being delivered safely and protected. Sometimes the Bible refers to a literal saving – one can be saved from the difficulties/circumstances of life, not necessarily by being removed from all predicaments (although that can happen) but be saved through our situation by the presence and power of Jesus. The Bible also talks about being saved or salvation as an eternal, spiritual freedom. (Bible Reference 1)

So, what are we saved from in the spiritual sense? We are saved from God’s judgement of sin (breaking the law of God; rebellion against God). God is pure, perfect and Holy – He cannot tolerate the evil, immoral and blemishes that sin brings. Sin separates us from God (Bible Reference 2) and the consequence of sin is death (Bible Reference 3) Salvation refers to our deliverance from the consequence of sin and involves the removal of sin.

The Bible, God’s Word to us says, in the New Testament book of Romans 6:22-23 Amplified Bible (AMP)

22 But now since you have been set free from sin and have become [willing] slaves to God, you have your benefit, resulting in sanctification [being made holy and set apart for God’s purpose], and the outcome [of this] is eternal life. 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God [that is, His remarkable, overwhelming gift of grace to believers] is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Only God can remove sin and deliver us from penalty/consequence of sin – death. How He did this is through Jesus. Jesus, God’s only Son, died on the cross and then rose from the dead. By Jesus dying in our place, He took on all the sin of everyone (Bible Reference 4). He dealt with it, the price was paid, it was an immense cost, but it is covered, not for just a few, but for everyone who believes. It didn’t end there – Jesus rose from the dead, giving us life through immense grace (undeserved favour). Scripture is very clear about this, salvation is the gracious, undeserved gift of God (Bible Reference 5) is only available through faith in Jesus Christ.

So how do I get it?

We are saved by faith. First, we must hear the good news of Jesus’ death and resurrection. (Bible Reference 6) Then, we must believe – fully trust the Lord. This involves repentance (Bible Reference 7) acknowledging we are sinful and wanting to turn from our sinful ways (change our heart and mind) and call on Jesus Christ and claim Him as our own personal saviour.

Do you want to be saved? It is simply a matter of believing when you ask (Bible Reference 8). You might like to use this example

Dear Lord Jesus, I know that I am a sinner, and I ask for Your forgiveness. I believe You died for my sins and rose from the dead. I turn from my sins and invite You to come into my heart and life. I want to trust and follow You as my Lord and Saviour.

This is just a glimpse into salvation. Salvation - is deliverance, protection, healing, rescue, escape, cure, preservation. The source is Jesus – and with Jesus there is so much more to experience. However, it is Jesus’ personal invitation to anyone who opens their heart to Him and invites Him into their life who is assured of personally experiencing His presence and power in everyday situations and eternal freedom.

Bible Reference 1 is taken from “The Message” paraphrase Bible; Bible References 2-8 are from “New Living Translation of the Bible.
